The People’s Government of China officially opened its market to import pork from Costa Rica, said Bernardo Jaén, general director of the National Animal Health Service (SENASA). This result is the result of a negotiation process that began in 2013 with the signing of the protocol on veterinary and sanitary requirements. In 2016, the Chinese authorities audited possible exporting establishments after inter-institutional work between SENASA, the Ministries of Agriculture and Livestock and Foreign Trade (COMEX), in conjunction with the Foreign Trade Promoter (PROCOMER). “The opening of China’s health authorities to the Costa Rican product, without prior inspection of the meat processing plants, is a reflection of the confidence that these authorities have in the National Animal Health Service of Costa Rica; This is the first step to increase exports of livestock products to this destination,” said Bernardo Jaén.
