As part of the 60th anniversary of diplomatic relations between Uruguay and Indonesia, the Indonesian Ambassador to Uruguay, Suleiman Syarif, participated in an event held at the Universidad Católica del Uruguay (UCU), where he highlighted the complementarity between the two markets and opportunities for cooperation in trade and investment.
During the meeting, opportunities for cooperation in sectors such as dairy products, beef, citrus fruits, seafood, and renewable energy were discussed. The complementary nature of trade relations was also highlighted, since Uruguay exports agricultural and livestock products to Indonesia, while Indonesia exports electronics and footwear to Uruguay.
Among the challenges to expanding trade are the high costs of container shipping and difficulties related to business visas. In this context, both countries resumed negotiations to establish a Preferential Trade Agreement (PTA) through a gradual approach, beginning with sector-specific tariff reductions, with the aim of facilitating greater private-sector participation in bilateral trade.
