On September 14, 2026, in New Delhi, Mario Lubetkin, Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Oriental Republic of Uruguay and Pro Tempore President of MERCOSUR, and Piyush Goyal, India’s Minister of Commerce and Industry, announced the start of negotiations to expand the Preferential Trade Agreement between MERCOSUR and India.
Currently, MERCOSUR and India are working to finalize the Terms of Reference, which will establish the scope and structure of the future expanded agreement. The initiative seeks to expand the agreement in-force to cover areas of mutual interest and deepen economic ties, creating greater opportunities for the private sector.
The current agreement between the two parties governs trade in goods; it was signed on January 25, 2004, and entered into force on June 1, 2009.
