This May 2026 marks the second anniversary of the entry into force of the Free Trade Agreement (FTA) between Ecuador and the People’s Republic of China, signed on May 10, 2023. Since its implementation on May 1, 2024, the agreement has served as a catalyst for the growth of non-oil exports, allowing the bilateral trade flow to maintain sustained dynamism and reach record figures in the regional trade balance.
During this period, the strategic use of tariff benefits has strongly boosted the export of Ecuador’s flagship products. Sales of shrimp, bananas, and flowers have shown the highest growth, securing a greater presence in Asian markets. Additionally, Ecuador has diversified its imports from China, acquiring more technology and industrial equipment. This has been key in sectors such as telecommunications and machinery, helping the local industry become more modern and competitive.
The balance of these two years of implementation demonstrates that the commercial relationship with China has moved to a superior level. The reduction of taxes has not only increased the exchange of products but has also consolidated Ecuador as a strategic and reliable partner in the Asia-Pacific region, opening the door to new long-term cooperation projects.
