Within the framework of a lecture series on East Asian geopolitics and international relations, the Embassy of Japan in Uruguay facilitated a visit to Montevideo by leading expert Prof. Dr. Shino Watanabe, faculty member at the Faculty of Global Studies at Sophia University (Tokyo). The professor is a specialist in Chinese foreign policy, international development finance, and East Asian international relations, with an extensive academic background at Sophia University, George Washington University (Fulbright Scholar), and the Japan Institute of International Affairs (JIIA).
The presentations focused on analyzing the evolution of strategic, economic, and security ties among Japan, China, the United States, and South Korea in a rapidly transforming international context. During the sessions, Dr. Watanabe examined how major Asian powers are redefining their global positions based on recent regional political transitions and the new scenario opened following the start of Donald Trump’s second administration in the U.S.
