Peru and India plan to sign a Free Trade Agreement in 2026

Peru’s Minister of Foreign Affairs, Hugo de Zela, announced that the signing of a Free Trade Agreement (FTA) with India is expected in 2026. He noted that India also aims to conclude the agreement as soon as possible and highlighted that negotiations with the Indian authorities have been positive.

Regarding bilateral trade, India has positioned itself as a relevant trading partner for Peru. Within trade exchanges between Peru and Asia-Pacific countries, India ranked fourth as a destination for Peruvian exports and third as a source of imports, according to the average for the 2015–2024 period.

Exports between Peru and India increased from USD 676.3 million in 2015 to USD 4.7 billion in 2024. Imports from India, on the other hand, showed more moderate growth, rising from USD 934.6 million to USD 1.1 billion over the same period. Regarding the composition of exports, critical minerals—mainly gold and copper—accounted for more than 95% of the total exported on average between 2015 and 2024.
