The Catholic University of Uruguay hosted the conference “Korean Culture and Bilateral Relations with Uruguay”

On November 4, 2025, the Catholic University of Uruguay (UCU) hosted the conference “Korean Culture and Bilateral Relations with Uruguay,” which featured the Ambassador of the Republic of Korea to Uruguay, Mr. Noh Wonil, as the main speaker.

During the meeting, topics related to diplomatic and economic cooperation between the two countries were addressed, as well as Korea’s role within the international community and the global expansion of Korean culture, or “Hallyu.”

The ambassador recalled that diplomatic relations between Uruguay and Korea were established in 1964, and that the opening of the Korean Embassy in Montevideo in 1966 marked the beginning of growing cooperation. Among the most notable milestones, he mentioned high-level official visits, scholarship and academic exchange programs, and joint projects such as the construction of the Punta del Tigre Combined Cycle Thermal Power Plant.

In his presentation, Mr. Noh emphasized the role of renowned Korean companies — such as Samsung, Hyundai, and SK — in leading global sectors such as semiconductors, automotive manufacturing, and industrial machinery. He also highlighted the international influence of the Korean cultural wave, visible in music, film, and television series, and recalled the relevance of the Uruguay Round in opening the Korean film market.

The conference concluded with a dialogue session with students, during which the ambassador shared his reflections on Korea’s role in Asia and the challenges of today’s international landscape.
