On December 19, 2025, Japan and Mercosur formalized a Strategic Partnership Framework during the bloc’s summit held in Brazil.
This agreement aims to facilitate dialogue between Japan and the Mercosur member states and represents a mutual commitment in favor of an open market economy. The agreed contents cover: trade, investment, supply chain resilience, energy transition, and other areas of strategic relevance.
Regarding bilateral trade between Japan and Mercosur, Japanese exports to the bloc nearly doubled, increasing from USD 612 million in 2020 to USD 1.1 billion in 2024. Imports from Mercosur, although higher in the total volume, showed volatile growth rates.
