Peru and Japan Celebrate 24 Years of the Bilateral Investment Treaty (BIT) and the Evolution of Bilateral Trade

In the last decade, the exchange of goods between Peru and Japan has been favorable for Peru.

Regarding Peru’s bilateral trade with Japan, exports increased from USD 1.1 billion in 2015 to USD 3.2 billion in 2024, showing a significant growth of 198%. The main products shipped to Japan were from the metal ore (57.7%) and mineral fuels (27.6%) sectors, which together accounted for more than 85% of total exports.

Meanwhile, imports remained almost unchanged, from USD 1 billion in 2015 to USD 1.1 billion in 2024. The main product categories imported to Peru from Japan were: motor vehicles (32.4%), nuclear reactors, boilers, and machinery (22.3%), rubber and rubber manufactures (13.8%), and foundry, iron, and steel (11.1%).

These results highlight the growing importance of Japan as a trading partner for Peru.

The Peru–Japan Economic Partnership Agreement (EPA), in force since 2009, has supported the strengthening of these ties, facilitating the flow of goods and expanding the range of products exchanged.
